AeroGarden – Grow Food Year Round!

Try It Yourself Thursday

The winds are blowing… The snow is piling up on the sidewalks… The days are dark and dreary. Ugh! It seems as though this winter will never end! It started early and looks as though it’s going to hang on for many more months. If I were a betting person, I’d say this one’s going to be a doozy and we’ll have snow hanging around into May.

Between the cold outside and all those seed catalogs showing up in my mailbox, it’s hard to not dream about warm summer days, dirt under my fingernails and fresh fruits and vegetables picked straight from the garden. Yum…. I can already taste the juicy sweetness of a vine ripened tomato and the crispness of freshly cut rhubarb. Sigh…. those days are a ways off.

But what if there was a way to have a little “indoor” garden that didn’t take up much space… didn’t have any messy dirt… and had it’s own water and light sources built right in. And best of all it doesn’t take up much space and can easily sit on a bookshelf, a corner of the counter or even on top of the frig.

Well…. I may have a solution for you that can get rid of those winter blahs and brighten your day. I recently received an AeroGarden for a present. Truth be told, I think I got it as a gift because my husband didn’t like having all the dirt and big fluorescent lights setup in the basement. 🙂

Indoor Seed Starting and Growing Station – My Husband may have a point! 🙂

It’s kind of an interesting concept… Basically it’s a mini-hydroponics system. It uses these sponges to hold the seed while it grows in a water reservoir that comes with a liquid fertilizer. The kit even came with a few different seeds for various herbs.

Since I’m kind of a science nerd, I figured I’d give it a shot and see how it works. It would definitely be nice to have some fresh lettuce, or spinach, that I don’t have to worry about being contaminated since there seems to be a new outbreak every couple weeks.

So starting today, I’m going to give it a shot and try to grow some herbs. I’m thinking some basil would be nice, or even some cilantro for my Mexican dishes. I’ll report back later to let everyone know how it went… the good, the bad and the ugly.

And if something like this peaks your interest…. Here’s a couple links to the AeroGarden and Sponges that I was gifted by my husband.
